Heeley People’s Park
Heeley People’s Park is Sheffield’s first and largest, community owned and managed public green space.
Housing clearances in the 1970’s and 80’s left behind large swathes of neglected and derelict land at the heart of the Heeley community. Local people rallied together to do something about this, formed Heeley Development Trust (HDT) in 1996 and eventually secured funding to redevelop the site as a community park. In 1997, the Trust took ownership of the 3.5 hectares of land through a 125 year lease from Sheffield City Council.
The success of the park must be credited to the hard work, perseverance and vision of the HDT staff, volunteers and trustees. This once unloved space has been transformed into the Yorkshire & Humberside Flagship community park that it has now become.
